The Old Teapot

Modern industrial apartments

Conversion of one of the first Co-Op food stores to seven exclusive apartments in a Cheshire conservation area. The building frontage was reinstated as it was when trading in the early 1920s, and the development was of great interest to its community, many of whom remember the shop fondly. Properties in the front original portion of the building were fitted out and finished in keeping with its age, providing apartments with a fresh take on classic features and detailing.

THE LOCATION

The conservation area of Marple Bridge is an extremely popular and picturesque location owing to its beautiful stone built properties and the steep sided valley created by the River Goyt. That combined with a wealth of local amenities and excellent transport infrastructure made Marple Bridge a fantastic location for a RESTORE development of seven luxury apartments.

THE SITE

The Old Teapot was formerly a key amenity serving the needs of a vibrant industrial community. Opening in 1851 as the first Compstall Cooperative Industrial society (CCIS) shop and trading for over 100 years. It was then the premises of an undertakers, and later converted to offices.

However, prior to the current redevelopment, the building had been left dormant for more than 20 years and was in danger of collapse. The unique history, unique character, as well as the vulnerability, of this local heritage asset created a fantastic opportunity for the RESTORE team to both preserve and enhance a long standing and important part of the local community.

THE DEVELOPMENT

The Old Teapot was lovingly restored and converted into seven luxury apartments. Befitting of the rural location and a desire to create homes that worked with and showed off its character; RESTORE ensured the apartments were very generously proportioned. Not just in accommodation, but spaces to be enjoyed by their owners and guests. The development comprised of four three bedroom apartments and three two bedroom apartments, but owing to the unique character of the original building, each of these apartments was completely different in layout and architectural design. Prior to the restoration the building was tired and dilapidated, and original features had been neglected. It was therefore a priority for the original detailing and materials to be reinstated in key locations.

RESTORE’s thoughtful interiors paid homage to the history of The Old Teapot. For the apartments to the rear of the building, which reside in a more recent warehouse extension, creativity was drawn from the utilitarian construction, providing a more industrial and modern aesthetic with exposed steel beams, structural columns, and clean lines, whilst enjoying a warm palate to maintain a strong sense of comfort and home.
